If there’s one thing I struggle with at night, it’s disconnecting from my phone. If I had a dollar for every time I told myself I was going to sleep but ended up doomscrolling for half an hour in bed instead, I’d be rich.
There are apps that can help limit phone use at night and improve sleep, but I prefer simple, maybe not smarter, methods. Mainly, I just place my phone face down on my nightstand and try to forget about it. Sometimes it works, and honestly, most of the time it doesn’t.
But it seems the best solution to stop doomscrolling at night may have just been developed by the company you might least expect: IKEA.
That’s right, the Swedish furniture company has come up with a new way to help people stop doomscrolling at night. It’s called the Phone Sleep Collection, a tiny little bed you can tuck your smartphone into. This way, not only do you get a comfortable rest, but your smartphone does too.
In typical IKEA fashion, you do have to build the tiny smartphone bed yourself, but there is a reward for your efforts — not only for building it, but also for actually putting your phone in it. However, one unfortunate caveat to all this is that IKEA’s smartphone bed is limited to only one country at the moment.
IKEA’s smartphone bed is clever, but it isn’t available worldwide
You can be rewarded for using it
If you like the idea of slipping your phone into a tiny IKEA bed each night, you’ll probably have to wait. IKEA’s Phone Sleep Collection is currently exclusive to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) when you spend 750 AED (about $204). Still, how IKEA’s smartphone bed works is interesting, as it provides a fun challenge to help you stop scrolling before bed, which might make you wish it was available outside the UAE.
The challenge aims to help you stop scrolling at night, rewarding you with an IKEA gift voucher. It works by using the NFC tag built into the small smartphone bed, which links to the IKEA app on your phone and monitors how long your phone stays in it. If you keep your phone in the bed for seven consecutive nights, with at least seven hours each night, you’ll earn a gift voucher worth 100 AED (about $27).
The thought of having a tiny bed for my smartphone to help me stop doomscrolling was amusing enough already, but the fact that you actually get rewarded for doing it makes it way more enticing…
IKEA is calling this challenge the “7-Day Phone Sleep Challenge,” and I must say that I think this is absolutely genius. The thought of having a tiny bed for my smartphone to help me stop doomscrolling was amusing enough already, but the fact that you actually get rewarded for doing it makes it way more enticing, even if it’s only worth $27. That’s definitely enough for some meatballs at IKEA’s Swedish Restaurant.
The only thing that would have made IKEA’s smartphone bed much better is if it had wireless charging, so you could charge your phone while it’s tucked away too, but I guess we can’t have everything. Fingers crossed a sequel will include it.
IKEA is only promoting its Phone Sleep Collection in the UAE, but now that I’ve seen what it looks like and how it works, I’m eager to see it expand to more countries. Would I spend $200 at IKEA just for this? Possibly, especially since I’ve been meaning to buy a new bookshelf for ages. And if I could get a gift card as well for using it? Even better.
IKEA hasn’t said if it plans to bring its Phone Sleep Collection to other countries just yet, but if it does, don’t be surprised if I’m first in line.
