YouTube is preparing to reintroduce a long-requested feature: direct messages between users. According to information on the platform’s support page, the company has begun testing a new system that allows users to converse and share videos directly within the mobile app. This updated version of direct messaging aims to provide more convenient ways to share long videos, Shorts, and live streams.
Direct messaging was originally available on YouTube until 2019, when the platform removed the feature. Despite its removal, it remained one of the most frequently requested tools by the community. YouTube now appears ready to respond to this demand. The feature is currently being tested by adult users aged 18+ in Ireland and Poland, who can use the interface to send videos and hold conversations inside the app.
YouTube describes the experiment as an effort to simplify communication and video sharing. The company states that it wants to make it easier for users to share content they enjoy and discuss it directly without relying on third-party applications. YouTube highlights that this feature is returning due to consistent user demand, and the platform is actively seeking feedback from testers.
Test participants can not only send messages and share videos within YouTube but also share videos through other apps as usual. YouTube also reminds users that messages may be reviewed for compliance with Community Guidelines, underscoring the importance of safety and moderation.
The test version also includes features such as the ability to block other users and report conversations, ensuring a safer communication environment. These actions align with standard protections found in other messaging platforms.
At the moment, there is no confirmed timeline for a broader release. YouTube has not specified when the direct messaging feature might expand to more regions or to the general user base. The company is likely evaluating feedback, usage behavior, and safety considerations before moving forward.
