If you hate iOS 26’s Liquid Glass, this is the setting you’ve been waiting for

Apple’s latest makeover, Liquid Glass, has its users up in arms — half raised in celebration, the other half bearing pitchforks. The controversial new interface makes on-screen elements translucent and interactive with whatever’s happening in real time, extending across iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, and tvOS 26. If you’ve updated any of your devices, chances are, your displays are all see-through.

I dig Liquid Glass on my iPhone 16 Pro, but not everyone shares that fondness. So much so that with iOS 26.1, Apple is rolling out a new customization option to bring back some opaqueness to your screen. So, put down your pitchforks and read on.

A cure for Liquid Glass

Back to ‘solid’ glass you go

iOS 26.1 is the first software update for Apple’s newest operating system, and the fourth developer and public beta rolled out on Monday, October 20. Along with new alarm features, song-swiping gestures, and an Apple TV+ rebrand (per MacRumors), the update will include a new toggle that will let you customize the look of your device’s Liquid Glass with a new ‘tinted’ option.

The tint renders screen elements less transparent and more opaque, bringing back some contrast users felt was lost with the original Liquid Glass design. While you can’t (yet) adjust how opaque your interface becomes, the addition of the tint option shows that Apple heard the complaints and responded with more customization. The tech giant didn’t double-back — it doubled-down on putting more customization options into its users’ hands.

This new switch is introduced in iOS 26.1, and it’s also expected to land on other operating systems that implemented the software design, like your iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac.

How to get tinted Liquid Glass now

You’ll need the beta

How to get tinted Liquid Glass.

iOS 26.1 is expected to officially launch at the end of October, but if you can’t wait to frost your Liquid Glass, you can download the public beta now.

To install the beta, first sign up at beta.apple.com. Then go to Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates and choose iOS 26.1 beta from the list. Definitely make sure to back up your iPhone first — it’s good practice to do so before updates of any kind so you don’t lose any data.

Once you have the beta installed, you can alter your Liquid Glass by following these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Display & Brightness.
  3. Tap into Liquid Glass.
  4. Select Tinted.

At the top of your screen, you’ll see an example of what Clear versus Tinted looks like, so choose according to your preferences. Tinted offers more contrast, and I do think notifications look significantly better when they’re more opaque — especially at a glance from across my desk.
