Ahead of a staggered release of its final season, Netflix uploaded the first five seasons of Stranger Things on YouTube for your viewing pleasure.
The five-minute trailer (if we’re rounding up) kicks off in a similar fashion to Netflix’s promotional rollout of season 5: nostalgia. Rather than subjecting fans to in-house reaction videos from the cast going over the show’s best moments, we’re sent back to November 1983, i.e., the year the first season takes place. Here, we see Will Byers (Noah Schnapp)—poor, bowl-cut, CGI-de-aged Will—being terrorized by the Demogorgon. The Demogorgon interrupts Will, calming his nerves, singing The Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go.” The Demogorgon shrugs off a shot to the face. The Demogorgon, news to everyone, including the abject horror of Will, can also climb trees. That’s right. It climbs now.
After making a leap of faith from one tree to another, the Uncanny Valley Will plummets from said tree and konks out on the cold, hard ground. We then see what happened to Will in the lag time of his forced nap. There, the Demogorgon drags his limp body back to Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), because he was always there, you see. Looming in the shadows, moving chess pieces and whatnot.
Vecna wraps Will in fleshy vines and monologues about finally being able to begin some far-reaching plan of his before having one of said vines go in Will’s mouth and pump some parasitic gross stuff down it. Despite coming out years before humanity was graced with Green Goblin’s monologue to Spider-Man, Vecna apes his flow by telling Will, “We are going to do such beautiful things together, William.” He used his government name, so you know he means business. And scene!
It was very shrewd of Stranger Things to basically clickbait its fanbase with this video, only for it to mainly be a rehash of old info fans already knew, with some retrofitted “this villain was always here” bits. Tying it all together with the very much adult cast needing to be CGI’d down, what with how long the show has gone on, was a cherry on top for the most cynical of its viewing audience. But for the dedicated followers of all these wild events in Hawkins, Indiana, it’s at least interesting to see more of Will’s time in the Upside Down, still teeming with mystery (for now, that is).
Regardless, fans will have to wait and see what the hell Vecna means when he says “beautiful things.” The only other newish bit of info we get from the trailer is laden in its description, which reads, “With Hawkins under lockdown, El in hiding, and danger lurking at every turn, the entire party unites with a single goal: to hunt and kill Vecna.” It’s a battle of dual plans and machinations for one final time, folks.
Stranger Things 5 “Volume 1” releases on November 26, followed by Volume 2 on Christmas, and The Finale on New Year’s Eve (in theaters, no less).
